Although the first television service in the world was launched in the year 1936 by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC), it began in India only two decades later. UNESCO aided in introducing TV in Delhi, India on September 15, 1959. By 1965, the daily transmission began as a part of All India Radio which continued till the year 1976, after which the radio was separated from television services. Only seven cities could avail television services until 1975 and it was only by 1982 that the national telecasts were introduced in India.

The Past: What was it like?

Until 1976, TV broadcasts were transmitted in Black and White (B&W) and it was only after 17 long years that the country had eight stations to serve 45 million people across the 75,000 sq. kilometers. During the 1980s, the government-owned channel Doordarshan was introduced and it became the national channel and it was then when a larger segment of Indians started buying their own TV sets.

From the time when programmes aired only twice a week for an hour, to having more than 800 dedicated channels for news, entertainment, sports etc. today – the TV market in India has emerged significantly over the decades.

    The Present Scenario

Indians have been enjoying a variety of content over the past 5 decades and more and it has changed drastically ever since. Initially digitization started in the urban areas and by taking it to rural areas by the end of 2016, the industry is growing leaps and bounds. As per 2012 statistics, 138 million households (from a total of 223 million) owned a television. Cable penetration has reached 80% of Indian population - thanks to the DTH (Direct to Home) services.

The television industry in India has expanded as a result of advertising and subscription revenues by almost 15.5% in year 2010 and will continue to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 16%.

However, in today’s interconnected world, the emergence of smart TVs has allowed us to connect our TVs with other smart devices and looking at the internet penetration surging each passing day, smart televisions will be driving the future. By 2017, the Indian Smart TV market will reach ₹54,000 crores at a CAGR of 87.02% (in between 2012-2017).

    What will the future hold?

The future of television is certainly bright provided it continues to mould itself as per the latest demands of users. As the demand for web-based and content-integrated devices soars, it becomes critical for the television manufacturing industry to advance in technology and evolve as a convergence tool. Also TV watching habits are fast changing so the industry must provide content that fits the requirement of their users with distinct tastes, languages and more.

Following are the trends (as published in a report by EY) that will make an impact in the Indian television market in the future...

    • Digitization will grow through DTH, regular 3G rollouts and increasing internet penetration
    • New revenue models will be driven by unbundling of content
    • Technological advancements will enable omni-platform consumption for viewers
    • Anytime, anywhere content will promote bingeing at all times
    • TV watching will be personal and not just a social/family activity
    • TV consumption will shift from living rooms to bedrooms
    • Content producers will become powerful as a result of high costs of content
    • Transparency will lead to per-viewer carriage models
    • Unicasting will lead to result-based ad models
    • Feedback will be more real-time by the means of social dynamics

television is here to stay no matter what, even though there's word around of content migration to smaller hand held devices, I guess there will always be a tele loyal audience who will forever enjoy the pleasures of personal home viewing/entertainment.

In future we can see poster and calendar like TVs who will have just need to paste on the wall and no need of heavy wall mount and if it gets true then it will be great.

Why LeEco doesn't launch Super4 tv series in India? I have been asking them for last 3-4 months. Every time I get the same answer. " More super product coming soon. Please watch our social media Page". Tired by watching LeEco Page. Nothing is there about their new product launch..
