CES is always a great time for tech lovers; we get to experience the latest technology trends and innovations! Every year, manufacturers bring us a whole new world of possibilities – some come true and some don’t, but the sheer breadth of products and technologies emerging out of CES is always exciting.

So, this weekend, I sifted through almost every announcement at CES 2017 and looked into almost every piece of tech at the exhibition. The end result is a personal list of winners – tech that I consider interesting and promising. There’s a lot more tech showcased at CES that you might like; check for links at the end of this article.

    Laptops
    [IMG]
    Dell XPS 13 2-in-1

Dell scored a winner with the XPS 13 and its InfinityEdge display. This year, they announced a new 2-in-1 version of the best laptop on the market, with a few upgrades (and one downgrade). The XPS 13 2-in-1 is thinner and lighter than the previous generation. It features a 360-degree hinge that lets you use tablet and tent modes, in addition to the regular laptop mode. The only compromise is performance. Dell decided to switch to fan-less processors on their latest laptop, one of Intel’s Y-series Core i7-7Y75 Kalby Lake processors. This means a quieter, definitely slower laptop – much slower than the desktop-grade processors on the previous XPS 13. Nevertheless, it is still a decent performer that balances form and function quite well.

    Desktops
    [IMG]
    Dell Canvas

Canvas is Dell’s take on the Surface Studio. However, unlike the Studio, which is an all-in-one PC with a big easel-like screen, the Canvas is happy being an add-on display to your existing PC. A 27-inch touch sensitive panel, it is meant to be laid out in front of a standard monitor and gives you a new area to work on for input. Dell is rightly marketing the Canvas as an ideal solution for artists and other creative types. I believe displays such as the Canvas will be more useful once Windows 10 Creators Update is released to the public, allowing your average Joe to churn out masterpieces at will.

    Smartphones
    [IMG]
    ASUS ZenFone AR

Asus chose the perfect time to unveil this beast of a smartphone that is the world’s first Tango and Daydream-compatible phone! A 5.7-inch QHD Super AMOLED display, Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 processor, 8GB RAM, 256GB onboard storage, hybrid SIM with microSD support and a 23MP rear camera with motion tracking and depth sensors – the spec list is superlative! The Zenfone AR comes with Android 7 Nougat out of the box, supports Tango 3D Mapping tech for Augmented Reality, and works with Daydream View for Virtual Reality – all this in a fairly svelte package that tips the scales at 170 grams. This is an impressive product from the Taiwanese manufacturer! Expect more smartphones in 2017 to pack AR and VR support, bringing this once-exclusive tech to the masses. Let the games begin!

    Smart Projector
    [IMG]
    Razer Project Ariana

Razer’s Project Ariana is a full-room projector that takes the content of your favourite games and projects it over an entire room. To be specific, it takes information from a video game and projects it into a room, engulfing a player in real-time action. The real action still happens on your PC/Laptop monitor but the background lighting from the Ariana projector leads to an extremely immersive gaming experience. It feels like virtual reality without a headset! Ariana uses Razer’s Chroma lighting tech, combines it with 4K video projection tech and laser sensors, and needs game code integration from publishers. All in all, an excellent showcase of Razer’s gaming icon credentials. Party spoiler? Ariana is not a consumer product yet, with Razer hoping to put it on shelves by the end of the year.

    Smart TVs
    [IMG]
    LG OLED W-Series TVs

Last year, LG introduced their G6 series OLED TVs with a tag line “Picture on Glass”. This year, LG debuted their latest series of “Picture on Wall” OLED TVs at CES to a crowd that couldn’t believe its eyes. The W-series TVs (W stands for Wallpaper, of course) are 2.6mm thin strips of awesomeness that HAVE TO BE wall-mounted!

With a display that thin, there is no stand at all! All hardware is contained in the soundbar, which connects to the display panel via a proprietary cable. LG says that its latest display panels now cover 99 percent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, are 25% brighter and support Active HDR. LG offers two variants in the W-series – one is a 65-inch panel that weighs just 7.7 kilograms while the other one is a 77-inch panel that weighs 12.2 kilograms. One thing is for sure – this is the future and the future is going to be expensive! LG’s G6 series TVs from 2016 started at $4,999 (INR 3.5 lakh approx.) so expect a huge mark-up on that price for the W-series.

    Smart Toys

    Lego Boost

Have you ever wished you could breathe life into your childhood Lego creations? Well, Lego is turning your wishes into reality, sort of. Lego Boost is a robotics and programming system aimed at kids as young as 7 years old. It contains a combination of motors, sensors, and a companion app that teaches you how to code so that you can program your new robot friends. You can use your existing Lego creations, add in appropriate Boost bricks and program it to do cool things. At CES, Lego showed off creations such as Vernie the Robot, Frankie the Cat and the Guitar 4000, instructions for which come in the box. What are you waiting for? Dust off your old Lego collections lying in the store room, get the Boost system and see your creations come to life!

    Smart Cars

    Faraday Future FF91

Faraday Future has a bold vision for the future of mobility and, this CES, it took the first steps towards executing its vision. The FF91 is an all-electric, high-performance, crossover car that can go from 0 to 100 kmph in 2.39 seconds. Built on the company’s Variable Platform Architecture (VPA), the FF91 combines supercar performance, precise handling, the comfort of an ultra-luxury passenger vehicle, and a unique collection of intelligent Internet features. Boasting a peak motor power of 1050 HP, the FF91 wowed everyone who took a test ride in the pre-production vehicles at CES with its ridiculously fast acceleration. Post-CES, Faraday Future reported over 64,000 reservations for the FF91, though the car is expected to hit the roads only in 2018.

    Smart Charging
    [IMG]
    Energous WattUp

After the initial brouhaha over wireless charging, interest died down as we realised the need for compatibility. Today, we have two competing standards, very few devices that support even one of those standards and we need to carry our wireless charger everywhere to be able to use it. However, Energous’ WattUp beams power to devices using radio frequencies. This means true wireless charging without the need for specific chargers for each device! Energous also disclosed that it has already signed a deal to supply its wireless power system to “one of the largest consumer electronic companies in the world”, and that the company’s tech is going through Apple compliance testing. I can’t wait for this to become a reality!

    Virtual Assistants
    [IMG]
    Amazon’s Alexa and Mattel’s Aristotle

We are just a week into 2017 and CES has just ended, but I’ve heard enough at this point to declare Alexa the winner of CES 2017, and I consider virtual assistants the biggest trend of the year. Apple, Microsoft, Google and Amazon are at the forefront of the virtual assistant revolution with products such as Siri, Cortana, Google Assistant, Google Home and Amazon Echo. It started with smartphones but is slowly but surely creeping into our homes. Amazon Echo was a surprise hit over the past year with home owners putting it to new uses all the time. Amazon’s Alexa platform already has 7000 ‘skills’ that you can use. Just talk to it (pun intended). At CES 2017, Alexa was everywhere – in cars, fridges, TVs, laptops, smartphones and even toys!

Now, Mattel, in association with Microsoft, brings us the Aristotle. Billed as a personality-driven virtual assistant cum companion for kids, it uses a combination of Alexa, Cortana and Mattel’s own tech to interact with kids as they grow. It has its own voice, recognizes your kid’s voice, can be programmed using a variation of IFTTT recipes (If the baby cries, do this ____!), teach languages and act as a companion for your kids when you’re busy! I wonder if, a few years down the line, we will have kids saying…

"Hi! I am Sam and Aristotle is my best friend!"

Where is future of mankind heading. We are becoming "Digital Zombies". The day is not far when we will have AI implementation like it was shown in the movie "Chappie". And our memory will be transferred to the machines. :)
